Memorial Day 2021 Schedule
Scavenger Hunt (May 22 - June 1)
As part of the City of Falls Church's modified Memorial Day activities, the Recreation and Parks' Department is hosting another Scavenger Hunt around parks and historical areas throughout The Little City.
Beginning Saturday, May 22 through Tuesday, June 1, thirteen signs will be hidden in different City of Falls Church parks. To find the parks, download and print the Memorial Day Scavenger Hunt Form (you can also pick up one up at the Community Center). Each QR code links to a specific park webpage. Visit those parks and find the hidden signs, which will show a specific Military Rank (i.e. General, Lieutenant). Write each Military Rank beside its corresponding QR code on the form. Send us a picture or scan of your completed form, along with your contact information and t-shirt sizes, to events@fallschurchva.gov (or drop it off at the Community Center) by Tuesday, June 1 to win your free Memorial Day Scavenger Hunt t-shirt!
The Memorial Day Scavenger Hunt is free to play for all ages. This is the fourth scavenger hunt the Recreation and Parks Department has hosted since the pandemic started (Historic Scavenger Hunt in June 2020, Hallow-scream Hunt in October 2020, and Heartfelt Hunt in February 2021).
Thank you to JD Callander with Weichert Realtors for sponsoring the Memorial Day Scavenger Hunt!
Beyer Auto 3K Fun Run (May 24 - May 31)
The Beyer 3K Memorial Day Fun Run returns for its fortieth year to The Little City. This year's Fun Run will be virtual. Register for the free Fun Run online, run your own 3K between May 24 and May 31, and pick up your free t-shirt outside the Community Center (223 Little Falls St.) on Monday, May 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Memorial Day Ceremony (May 31, 11:00 a.m.)
The cornerstone of every past, present, and future Falls Church Memorial Day event is the Memorial Day Ceremony, where the community comes together to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The Memorial Day Ceremony includes remarks or performances by the Falls Church Veterans Council, the Falls Church Concert Band, and more. Learn more about this year's Keynote Speaker, Ed Reinfurt.
Last year, our community came together remotely to pay tribute. This year, you're invited to watch the ceremony live and in-person at the Veterans' Memorial, located outside the Community Center (223 Little Falls St.) Pre-registration is required (www.fallschurchva.gov/memorialday2021) and all attendees will be asked to wear a mask. For those unable to join us in-person, Falls Church Community Television (FCCTV) will record the ceremony.
Thank you to Falls Church Harris Teeter's Floral Department for donating the wreath.
Quantico Marine Corps Band Concert (May 31, 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.)
The City of Falls Church is excited to host the Quantico Marine Corps Band in Cherry Hill Park (312 Park Ave.) as part of this year's Memorial Day event. The professional musical ensemble, comprised of 50 enlisted Marines and one officer, will perform a variety of classic and contemporary pieces. The Quantico Marine Corps Band is one of the oldest professional musical ensembles in the Marine Corps and plays over 300 community concerts along the Eastern Seaboard every year.
Advanced registration is required to attend the free concert. Registration opens to City of Falls Church residents on May 3 and to everyone on May 10. Register online at www.fallschurchva.gov/memorialday2021.
COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place and attendees will be asked to wear a mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines. Seating will not be provided - guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs.
Memorial Day Parade (May 31, 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
Led by our 2020 Memorial Day Grand Marshal, Lindy Hockenberry, the 2021 Memorial Day Parade will feature vehicles from many City of Falls Church Departments and the VFW Council. This year's parade will not be held exclusively on Park Ave., and instead travel throughout several City streets and neighborhoods. See the parade route.
