Music Therapy Thursdays with The Kensington

Description

Music Therapy Thursdays will explore a variety of ways participants and their caregivers can use different elements of music to maintain cognitive functioning, support healthy lung capacity, and encourage exercise all while interacting socially in a virtual setting. During the music therapy sessions, participant-preferred music will motivate participants to reminisce, challenge encoding and recall skills, practice deep breathing, give opportunities to use focused and divided attention, and keep up muscle strength from lips to toes.

Jessica Channell, a Board-Certified Music Therapist with Helping Harmony Music Therapy. A Fairfax native, Jessica received her degree in Music Therapy from Shenandoah University in Winchester, finishing with an internship at Westminster Canterbury of the Shenandoah Valley. Jessica?s love for working with gerontology and with those with dementia started while caring for her great aunt during college and became her specialization thereafter. Jessica co-founded Helping Harmony with her sister and brother in-law and is happy to serve not only those with dementia, but a wide variety of populations, including being one of the few Music Therapy Assisted Child Birth certified therapists on the East Coast. Jessica is now settled back in Winchester with her husband and two children where she enjoys cooking, gardening, and caring for her flock of chickens.
